I think it's such a great event (and so important), so I'd like as many people as possible to know about Earth Hour 2008 and participate if possible. Check out the website, too. It's an amazing global statement humanity is making with that! I am thrilled!

While in the U.S. we "spring forward" one hour for Daylight Savings Time... three weeks from now, you can take another simple action: On March 29, 2008, we're asking you--and millions of others--to switch off the lights for one hour during Earth Hour.

What is Earth Hour?

Earth Hour is a global event created to symbolize that each of us, working together, can make a positive impact on climate change--no matter who we are or where we live. Starting at 8 pm local time on March 29, 2008, individuals, communities and businesses will "turn off the lights" in cities around the world for one hour. This simple act will not only heighten awareness of the impacts of climate change on our world, but also inspire individuals and businesses to take practical action to reduce their own carbon footprint.

Where will the lights go off?

Everyone around the world is encouraged to be involved and shut the lights off in their homes and businesses. Major participation is planned in 25 cities around the world, on six continents. Four Earth Hour flagship cities in the U.S.--Chicago, Atlanta, Phoenix and San Francisco--are leading the way. Other participating U.S. cities include Denver, Miami and Charlotte.

*Even the San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge will be going dark for Earth Hour*

What can I do?

1. Participate in Earth Hour. Pledge to turn off your lights from 8 - 9 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2008. During that hour, replace old light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and commit to reducing energy consumption in the year ahead. 2. Tell your friends about Earth Hour. Share this message with your friends and family to encourage them to join with you (and millions of others) in support of Earth Hour.

Visitors from Canada

These days one will see Canadian geese just about everywhere. I love to see them fly in big pflogs above me and hearing the sounds they make. Wikipedia says: This well-known species is native to North America. It breeds in Canada and the northern United States in a variety of habitats. However, its nest is usually located in an elevated area near water, sometimes on a beaver lodge. Its eggs are laid in a shallow depression lined with plant material and down. The Great Lakes region maintains a very large population of Canada Geese. Like most geese, the Canada goose is naturally migratory with the wintering range being most of the United States. The calls overhead from large groups of Canada Geese flying in V-shaped formation signal the transitions into spring and autumn.

This picture has a cool story to it. I'd recommend to expand the pic to see the little guy in it better. Well, one evening I drove by this house which is in the next street where I live. I wanted to take a pic of that red lighted tree, cause it just looks fantastic in the night. Anyway, I was sitting in the car, ready to take my picture as my 20 month old son announces "Doggie!" from the backseat. And sure thing, all of the sudden there was a "dog" in my camera display. I put the camera aside and looked to the tree and couldn't believe my eyes. It was a fox! He seemed glued on the spot, but after a few seconds I saw what had gotten his attention. A tiny bunny...and sure thing the fox took off and chased that poor little bunny through the street! It was amazing to see, cause now I live aboout a 20 minute drive from the mountains, in a newer development. Behind my neighboorhood there is nothing but plains, and we are mostly surrounded by a wall. So I really was stunned seeing a fox at 7pm chasing a bunny in the street. But what a great pic it made, huh? :o)

Since it was Christmas Eve last night, I drove to a church just up the street to take a special picture. They have this nativity scene out there...build in front of this tower with the star on top. It looks so beautiful at night. But last night it was special of course, and the full moon gave it even more magic. Merry Christmas!

Finally I had my camera with me, when I came across deers on a front lawn again!!! I was so excited! There were all in all 6 deers. 3 babies, 3 adults. right next to a kind of busy street. I was able to get very close to take the picture, they didn't even care :o) I LOVE living in Colorado Springs :o) Lucky me gets to see deers about 3 times a month, even foxes now and then.

It's october finally!! The time of falling leaves, cooler days, more rain...comfort foods and so much more. Halloween is just around the corner, and then next month we will be digging into turkey, stuffing, green beans and pies and watch the first snow falling. 4 weeks later it's time to open presents and soon to celebrate the new year and then my birthday. Wow, exciting months are laying ahead, right?

This area, which is the neigborhood up Cheyenne Mountain, is my ultimate dream to live! One is so close to nature. I've seen many times deers and their youngs standing in front yards of these houses. Unfortnuately I never have my camera with me when that happens :o( It's gorgeous up there. When it's a rainy, cloudy day...one will be stuck in the low hanging clouds, the views from up there over the city and the plaids is....aaaah, don't even get me started! :o)

In our Old City there are the Scare Crow Days comming up. A nice little festival, with cook outs and arts. Every store in Old Colorado city puts up scare crows outside. Now I liked this one especially. The famous painting "The Scream" blended in with a scare crow, that looks like the face in the painting. Very creative! I took my son today for a stroll around the Prospect Lake at Memorial Park. One thing we both love there, is the squirrles. They are such playful little creatures that it makes me smile, and my son squeaks in delight, each and every time we see them. They are so tame, that some of them actually pick the seeds out of my hand. We can stand there forever, so it seems, watch them playing and chasing each other in the grass, up the trees. This mountain lion was killed in Colorado Springs, when a truck accidentaly hit it. It now can be seen at the Visitor Center of the Garden of the Gods.

Much of Colorado, including the Front Range, is prime mountain lion country. The mountain lion, commonly known as cougar, panther or puma, exists only in the Western hemisphere and is one of North America’s biggest cats. The Division of Wildlife estimates there are between 3,000 and 7,000 lions in Colorado, with the number most likely in the 4,500 to 5,000 range.
A lion’s natural life span is probably about 12 years in the wild and up to 25 years in captivity. Lions are very powerful and usually kill large animals, such as deer and elk. Natural enemies include other large predators such as bears, lions, and wolves. They also fall victim to accidents, disease, road hazards and people.

Mountain lions vary in size and weight, with males being larger than females. Adult males may be more than 8 feet in length and weight an average of 150 pounds. Adult females may be up to 7 feet long and weight an average of 90 pounds.

People rarely get more than a brief glimpse of a mountain lion in the wild. Lion attacks on people are rare, with fewer than a dozen fatalities in North America in more than 100 years. Most of the attacks were by young lions, perhaps forced out to hunt on their own and not yet living in established areas. Young lions may key in on easy prey, like pets and small children.

Cog Train on Summit of Pikes Peak

The Pike's Peak Railway is an Abt rack system cog railway, climbing the well-known mountain Pikes Peak. The base station is in Manitou Springs near Colorado Springs.
The railway is the highest in North America by a considerable margin. It was built and is operated solely for the tourist trade.

One of the tourists who visited the Pikes Peak region in the late-1880's was Zalmon Simmons, inventor and founder of the Simmons Beautyrest Mattress Company. Mr. Simmons rode to the summit of Pike's Peak on a mule, partly to enjoy the view and partly to check upon one of his inventions: an insulator for the telegraph wires which ran to the Army Signal Station on the summit. The arduous, two day trip on a mule was the only way to reach the top in those days. Mr. Simmons was awed by the scenery but determined that the views should be experienced in a more civilized and comfortable manner. He was relaxing in one of Manitou Springs' mineral baths after his return, when the owner of his Hotel mentioned the idea of a railway to the top. Mr. Simmons agreed with the concept and set about providing the capital needed to fund such a venture.
In 1889, the Manitou & Pike's Peak Railway Company was founded and track construction began in earnest. Top wages were 25 cents per hour. Six workers died in blasting and construction accidents. Of the original six locomotives, only #4 is still in operation and along with a restored coach makes infrequent trips short distances up the track.

A new era began in the late 1930’s with the introduction of gasoline and diesel powered locomotives. Spencer Penrose, owner of The Broadmoor Hotel, had acquired the Railway in 1925 and efforts were begun to build a compact, self-contained railcar, which could carry fewer passengers during the slow parts of the season. These efforts culminated in No. 7; a gas-powered, 23-passenger unit, which made its first run on June 16, 1938. It is believed that No. 7 is the first rack railcar ever built in the world. The experiment was a huge success, and within a year of No. 7’s introduction, No. 8, the world’s first diesel-electric cog locomotive, was delivered from the General Electric Company.

Today the railway operates througout the year. It takes around 1,5 hours for each trip up and down the mountain.

Helen Hunt Falls

Helen Hunt Jackson (1831-1885) a famed author moved to Colorado Springs in 1873. She wrote many poems and stories about the Pikes Peak Region. She started a letter writing campaign to promote the preservation of North Cheyenne Canyon as a public park.

She became outraged by the unfair treatment of American Indians. She was outspoken in defense of the Cheyenne and Arapho people after the Sand Creek Massacre (1864) and the defended the Utes (which are the Indians that used to live here) after the Meekere Massacre (1879). In order to increase the awareness of the injustices suffered by the American Indians, she wrote her 2 most important books: "A century of dishonor", and "Ramona".

It is said that there is paranormal activity going on around the area of the falls. Maybe the spirit of Helen...still trying to protect what she used to love so much?

I myself, drive up there pretty frequently. It's a very nice place.

Cadet Chapel

Soaring 150 feet toward the Colorado sky, and located at the Air Force Academy this chapel is an all-faith house of worship designed to meet the spiritual needs of cadets. It contains a separate chapel for each of the three major religious faiths represented in the Air Force ‑ Protestant, Catholic and Jewish ‑ plus two all-faiths worship rooms. There are two main levels, with the Protestant nave on the upper level. The Catholic and Jewish chapels and one all-faiths room are located beneath it. Beneath this level is located the larger all-faiths room and two meeting rooms. Each chapel has its own entrance, and services may be held simultaneously without interfering with one another.
The aluminum, glass and steel structure features 17 spires. There is no significance to this number. Original designs were judged to be too expensive, so changes were made, among them a reduction in the number of spires. The changes did not alter the basic design or the interior square footage of the chapel, however.
The shell of the chapel and surrounding grounds cost $3.5 million to build. Furnishings, pipe organs, liturgical fittings and adornments of the chapel were presented as gifts from individuals and various organizations. A designated Easter offering was also taken at Air Force bases around the world in 1959 to help complete the interior.

The Broadmoor Hotel is a 5-star/5-diamond luxury hotel and resort set on 3,000 acres at the base of Pikes Peak in southwestern Colorado Springs. It's been said it ranks in the top 10 of best Hotels in the whole US. Built in the early 20th century as the "Grand Dame of the Rockies", it was one of the finest resort destinations along the Rocky Mountains during the age of railroads. It continues to be a popular conference destination for businessmen and government officials. It also offers a tennis facility rated #3 by Tennis Magazine and its gigantic golf course will be hosting the US Senior Open in 2008.

The Broadmoor is able to serve many guests, as it has over 700 rooms, and 15 restaurants and cafes. It also has 3 golf courses, and includes a world class spa. The Penrose Room, named after Spencer Penrose, is the pinnacle of fine dining at the Broadmoor.

We went to the downtown park with our son today. He loves the fountain there. Usually you only see the blue top over the fountain. But about every 30 minutes, music turns on, and the blue top slowly lifts up. Revealing the spinning puppy and saxophone player. The water then keeps splashing from everywhere and the kids have so much fun! Best of all: It's FREE! ;o)

Founder of Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs was founded in 1871 as a resort destination for tourists visiting the American West. Founder General William Jackson Palmer was a Civil War hero who also was the engineer-in-charge of building a railroad line for the Kansas Pacific Railroad from Kansas City to Denver (he would later found the narrow-gague Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, a critically important part of Colorado's history). In 1870, Palmer bought 10,000 acres of land in the vicinity of a wild frontier town named Colorado City (now just a neighborhood named Old Colorado City), and a year later Colorado Springs was born.

I took this picture at our Mountain Zoo. I think it either the only Mountain Zoo in the whole states or one of the very few ones. It's a lot of up and down. No fun, when I have to push a stroller *lol* At the giraffes I really liked the way the sun would cast shadows onto their fur.

Air Force Choire

This picture was actually taken on Earth day at the Visitor Center of the Garden of Gods. From there you have a stunning view of Pikes Peak. The local Air Force Choire gave a performance there and it was really neat. The Air Force has a huge presences here in Colorado Springs. Besides the Air Force Academy, we have 3 Air Force Bases and the famous NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) here. It's said that their center is hidden inside one of the Mountains -Cheyenne Mountain...which I live right before. It's also said that, if there should ever be a 3rd World War Colorado Springs will be fore sure one of the first targets to be destroyed, for the above mentioned reasons. Yieks!

The Olympic Committee is located in Colorado Springs. It includes the Olympic Trainings Center, an amazing Visitor Center as well as the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame Rotunda. This is were I took this shot. I was standing in the middle of the Hall of Fame and above me, you could see through the ceiling the Olympic Flame. It was quite impressive!

My family's favorite place for relaxing walks. Lucky us, live only 5 minutes from this beautiful lake. I in praticular love how the mountains make sure, that the sky looks different each and every time we are there.

The towering red rock formations of this park are truly one of a kind! The site is a National Natural Landmark, having been recognized as "a nationally-significant natural area." It offers towering sandstone formations, a wonderful view of Pikes Peak (our Mountain top) and a bunch of hiking paths. One also can go on guided nature walks, mountain biking and horseback riding trails, road biking and technical rock climbing. It's an amazing place!

Pikes Peak is a mountain in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, 10 miles (16 km) west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. At 14,115 feet (4302 m), it is one of Colorado's 54 fourteeners and it is a National Historic Landmark. Katharine Lee Bates was moved to write the words to the song "America the Beautiful" in 1893, after having travelled to the top of Pikes Peak on a carriage ride.
